LGBT Fans Deserve Better
LGBT Fans Deserve Better is an all-volunteer organization of fans from all over the world who have come together with the mission to educate people on how harmful negative LGBTQ representation in the media can be to our community, as well as advocate for better, more positive representation. They aim to be a resource that enables the public to learn more about the issues facing the LGBTQ community in regards to media representation so they can become more critical viewers and creators, resulting in more creative, impactful, and positive stories in the future. They believe the transformative power of stories will not only change hearts and minds, but inspire greater understanding and efforts to better the lives of LGBTQ people in tangible ways.
Tegan and Sara Foundation
A portion of the proceeds from our 2017 Cocktails for Change event benefited the Tegan and Sara Foundation. The Tegan and Sara Foundation works for economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women. They work in partnership and solidarity with other organizations fighting for LGBTQ and women’s rights, raising funds and awareness. Their mission is founded on a commitment to feminism and racial, social and gender justice. They are fighting the inequality that prevents LGBTQ girls and women from reaching their full potential.
LGBTQ girls and women are disproportionately affected by poverty. 23% of lesbian women live in poverty. Women of color are 3 times more likely to live in poverty than white, LGB women. Transgender women are four times more likely to have a household income under $10,000 and twice as likely to be unemployed. One in five transgender women have reported being homeless at some point in their lives.
LGBTQ women have higher rates of obesity, gynecological cancer, depression, suicide and tobacco/alcohol abuse. Discriminatory laws, provider bias, insurance exclusions and inadequate reproductive health coverage leave 29% of LGBTQ women struggling to pay for health insurance.Less than 1% of TV characters are lesbian. Since the start of 2016, 25 queer female characters have been killed on-screen – continuing a decades-long trend.
The Trevor Project
A portion of the proceeds from the LGBT Fans merchandise sale will benefit The Trevor Project. Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.
